There is not a day that passes I do not remember this family and what an impact they have had and are still having on so many lives. May God continue to bless this family. I agree w/Amanda, Sam is watching over them. I know he and Allen are sharing some laughs and conversations in heaven.

Rhonda,

I heard of Hoppy's passing from Bill Fenner, who had apparently seen the obituary in the St. Joe newspaper. Not only am I sad for you and your children for the loss you are living with, but also for those who will not be helped by this brilliant man. The last I heard of Hoppy, he had gone from Central to John Hopkins. I think everyone in our high school class knew he would go on to do great things. The Hoppy I knew was not only the smartest kid in the class, but one of the funniest...if you really listened. I truly wish I would have had the opportunity to know Hoppy, the man.

I found this website on the reunion site for your class. As the Class of '71 celebrates their 40th reunion next year, I will have a copy of Hoppy's book on hand to show what this one man accomplished in his lifetime.

All my best to you and your children,
Jane

Dear Rhonda, Amanda, and family,

I miss you. Your quiet strength as a family and the joy you find in life was a gift from you and Sam. What other dad would let his son build a car inside the house or his daughter parachute from the sky? Rhonda, you and Sam embraced life by understanding that each minute was unique and special. You encouraged your kids to reach for their own goals and to not be carbon copies of each other. What a precious gift to give your children and what a legacy to leave them.

Remember well who he was because he has made you what you are today. Much love. Mrs. Murphy

This is to express my thanks for Dr. Hassenbusch.

I was privileged to meet him in two different M.D.Anderson surgery waiting room vigils for our friend Moira Doyle. He joined us for prayer before each. He extended Moira's life significantly, much to our joy. He also cared for her family and friends.

He passed through life well. I am proud to have met him.

Dear Ms. Hassenbusch and Family,

This week I found myself in a waiting room for two hours whilst my car tires were being changed. The waiting room had an old copy of Texas Monthly with the article on Dr. Hassenbusch which I found SO inspirational. I later googled his name to find out if he was still alive and found that he has been translated to heaven, but am glad to know he is now safe with God.

The sentence from the article that leapt out at me was that, concurrent with being an outstanding medical professional, Dr. H was a disciplined and earnest Bible scholar. In these modern times, most of we Christians leave this kind of scholarship to seminary-trained pastors and writers. It is a better course, however, to pursue knowledge of God on our own--and is perhaps the most valuable pursuit of our earthly lives. Thanks for sharing him--his life is such an inspiration.

Romans 8:38-39 "For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord."

I share your grief as our beloved daughter, Joyce Stankiewicz, just passed away on March 1, 2009 after being diagnosed with a GBM in December 2006. She too bore her disease with grace and hope, fighting hard in every clinical trial until there were no more. She was 41 and left a husband and 3 children aged 10, 9, and 8. We read early on about your father's battle with the GBM and shared his hope of a cure. Since I was active in researching and advocating for Joyce in her treatment, I bore such guilt after her death that I had not done enough, that I hadn't researched treatment options well enough. Sadly, discovering that your father too succumbed to this dreaded disease assures me that even in the best of circumstances, even in the most notable of cancer treatment centers, this disease shows no mercy. In a horrible irony, his passing eases my sense of guilt....that there just isn't a solution yet for any GBM sufferer. God bless you all in carrying forth his love in your life every day.

I am deeply sorry to read of Hoppy's passing last year. I met him in 1965 when he was enrolled at St. Joseph's Co-Cathedral School. He and I were in Boy Scouts together (my father was the scoutmaster of Troop 47 when he received his Eagle). The scout troop had swimming parties at his house during the summer months. Hoppy and I were tapped into the Tribe of Mic-O-Say in the summer of 1967 along with the assistant scoutmaster's son (Ron Rembe). I ran into him down here in Florida a couple of years ago, he was working as a mechanic in a shop in Largo.

I lost touch with Hoppy after hegraduated from Central and to be honest don't remember Rhonda at all from my high school years. I guess I'll have to dig out my old Wakitans and try to refresh my memory.

I'll pass the news of Hoppy's passing on to my dad back in St. Joe when I talk to him and mom tomorrow.

Once again I am truly saddened by the loss of a man I once called my friend. God bless you all .

We miss Dad every minute of the day. Today I am wearing my new cowboy boots in honor of Dad. I have also purchased Dunkin Donuts donut holes for my students--Dad loved loved Krispy Kreme donuts, but Dunkin Donuts was his second favorite. Dad left memories and made his mark on earth and I know he is up in heaven doing the same. Love, Amanda
